hi doreen, I cant take codine it affects my stomach badly so I wait a while and get a steroid injection to calm things down, although I only had one 3 weeks ago I know its wearing off quicker this time and as the SLZ hasnt started working yet I'm worried. I get a vibrating feeling in my feet when the flare starts, its like standing on top of a spinning washing machine then jumping off and still feeling the vibrations then the pains start Sad oh well onwards and upwards RollEyes Eileen x

Has anyone suggested patches for your pain? This would bypass your stomach so you wouldn't have problems there.
Perhaps you could discuss with your GP what pain medicines are available to you, there must be something that will help.

Hi Eileen,

I would have thought you would fit the criteria for the anti-TNF drugs if you have failed on more than one DMARD, including MTX. These are the next step up in terms of controlling your RA. I take humira, and it`s made a huge difference to me. It would be worth contacting your rheumy nurse to see what she says.

Painkillers of varying strengths might help in terms of pain control. I have a selection of paracetamol, codeine, tramadol, and slow-release tramadol depending on how severe the pain is. If you can`t take codeine they should offer an alternative. I also have amitryptiline to take alongside the painkillers at night.

Do you live near Alnwick? I like to go to " Barter Books" there - come away with loads of books. I go to the Freeman, where I see Dr. Bridget Griffiths. I was at my local hospital, in Durham, but opted to change to the Freeman for various reasons.

Take care,

Kathleen x

Hi Kathleen,
Yes I live about 10 miles west of Alnwick near to Ingram in the Breamish Valley, I love Barter Books too, always go there for a coffee and a rest when I've been looking around Alnwick or to the Infimary as its just across the road from it. I haven't been in since I moved back here in July but I believe they have a proper cafe there now, Hope they still have the coal fires burning in autumn/winter though ThumpUp
I used to see Bridget Griffiths too at the Freeman but didn't like how she always pushed you to take the pill of the month, she gave me anti inflammatories even though it was in my notes that i couldn't take them, I hear she is off on long sick leave now, my new rheumatologist told me on Monday.
I have tried a lot of different pain killers over the years and they all cause me problems, I am just one of those people who cant take tablets, I even get bad side effects from iron tablets Sad
I will contact the nurse and ask her about the anti tnf drugs you mention, thank you for telling me about them.

Hi Eileen,

I know Ingram and the Breamish valley!! Nick, my husband is a traditional musician - he plays fiddle and Northumbrian Pies, and is of course totally familiar with the Alnick Gathering, Alwinton Show etc. He likes to go walking in the Cheviots, and has written a tune called the "Bonny Breamish Valley." Small world, isn`t it?

The coal fire is still at Barter Books, and it`s nice & cosy in the colder weather.

I haven`t seen Dr. Griffiths for a while, but didn`t know she was on sick leave. Did you ever see Gill Wilson, the rheumy nurse? She`s really nice, though I mostly see Karl now that I`m on the anti-TNF.

Hope you get something to help you soon,

Kathleen x
